The first interview always seems like a hard nut to crack. But not really, if you go prepared and practice some interview etiquette before you face your prospective employer, you could feel a lot more positive. Follow these simple rules and you could come out a clear winner in this important phase of job-hunting.
Do's
Prepare and practice for the interview, but don't over-rehearse your answers.
Arrive about 10 minutes early. If you are running late, call and leave a message.
Dress well. Formal/conservative would be the safest option.
Take extra copies of your resume along with a portfolio (if you have one).
Don't grab a chair until you are offered one.
Remember body language and posture are very important: sit straight and look alert and interested at all times.
Be confident - and stress your achievements, but try not to sound over-confident.
Show your interest in the company by asking questions about the job, company, or industry.
Don'ts
Don't fidget or slouch.
Don't go with a bad breath. Brush your teeth, use mouthwash, or have a breath freshener before the interview.
Don't use slang.
Don't say anything negative about former colleagues, supervisors, or employers.
Don't ever lie. Be honest and straightforward.
Don't answer questions with a simple "yes" or "no." Explain whenever possible by giving examples.
Don't discuss personal issues or family problems.
Don't answer cell phone calls during the interview, better turn off (or set to silent ring) your cell phone
Don't inquire about salary, bonuses, or other benefits until after you've received an offer. If any questions are raised on salary try and delay it until you have an offer.
