Do's and Don'ts

Here's a general format that you could follow.

First paragraph
The opening paragraph is the most important one, so make sure it grabs the attention of the reader. Begin by telling how you heard about the job - friend, acquaintance, advertisement, etc. While you are at it, you could also add a few lines on your strengths and how effectively you could use them in the area of the job you are seeking.

Second Paragraph
Describe your qualifications for the job - skills, accomplishments, and personality traits. Pick the top three talents or characteristics that would make you stand out as a candidate. Here, you could also add a few lines on how you can contribute to this company.

Paragraph Three
Describe the attributes of the company that make you the perfect fit for it. Maybe you like their consistent growth or their attitude towards their employees. Companies feel good if the candidate relates to them, even before they are hired.

Paragraph Four
Conclude the letter by mentioning the enclosed resume and request for an interview. Suggest a time and a way for you to follow up. Also, give them an option to contact you easily if they require.
